Around the Ground
Here’s the poem created by our Extra Time goalie/poet Dean Parkin and based on the thoughts and feelings of people living around Lowestoft Town Football Club.
Feel free to add your voice to the poem, with the cheers and shouts and the winning roar.
AROUND THE TOWN
It could be the view from the bedroom window
where you watch the match at Crown Meadow
Or the thrill of saying you’ve seen your team playing
at Wembley (and you sat in the Royal Box)
Or the first game of the season and all the hopes
and the fears disguised by the cheers
when your team runs out on the pitch
And over the loudspeaker
the name of each player
gets a different level of roar
And the rowdy away supporters
voices in good order
to show that they’re still there
And at kick-off, it’s Come on Lowestoft!
Let’s make some noise
for the Trawler boys!
And the shouts ring around the ground —
Hey ref, that’s a corner! Referee, foul!
Sounds of a near miss, or red card growls
The appeals for a penalty…
jubilations when it’s given, jeers when it’s taken
celebrations when it goes in
And the moans and cries
when two minutes later (surprise, surprise)
they only go and equalise…
Our freekick… their keeper fumbles
a goalmouth scramble, the ball bobbles, our striker
nods it in! The ground erupts and rumbles
And we’re 2-1 up and hanging on
eight minutes of injury time (our legs are gone)
when the ref blows his whistle — we’ve won!
And three points and the start of a winning streak
let’s make the most of a victorious Saturday evening
before we do it all again next week!
