Old photographs and new beginnings

What a warm and enthusiastic welcome we received, when we visited Laxfield primary school just before the half term break.

Armed with old photographs, boots and shin pads on loan from Laxfield Museum, our very own goalie poet, Dean Parkin, assisted by volunteer linesperson Amanda, discussed what could be ‘read’ in the pictures, the differences in playing styles and outfits – and the importance of keeping old documents for future generations.

With that in mind, the children were invited to make donations to an imaginary museum collection of favourite sights, sounds and feelings, with Dean skilfully curating the contributions into the Museum of Us.

The Museum of Us is open for all to enjoy, by way of the YouTube link below.

Immediately after half term, we were off to Kessingland Primary Academy, to introduce the Year 5 children to the project and find out why they would like to take part in Extra Time.

We start our next programme at their school – and with residents at Manor Farm Care Home – straight after Christmas and, judging by their excitement at the thought of football, art and making new friends, it promises to be another wonderful Extra Time season.

‘It was such a lovely session; the children will be really excited to hear their poem being read.’
