The Village Remembered

Enjoy our simple step by step Create guides devised by professional artists and foragers for Friends Around the Table. Absolutely no experience is necessary, these activities are accessible for most people and can be undertaken in your own time.

Each guide welcomes you to explore food and nature in new and exciting ways to bring some relaxing and creative activity to your day. Once you have had a go, why not share the skills you have learned with a neighbor, friend or family member!

This activity has been created by poet Dean Parkin.

Activity

Think of a place you know or knew well in your village – it could be a house, shop, church, park, road or building. Imagine all the memories that the place would have.

Here are six questions about those memories. All you have to do is answer each one in a sentence (no one word answers). By putting your responses together, line-by-line, you will create a poem about that special place.

As an example, I am thinking of my old village shop and have provided my answers to each question below.

1) Something about the morning in the place
Each morning the ‘Open’ sign is turned by Iris

2) A person the place knows or knew and why
The first customer is always Tom, for his tobacco and EDP

3) A list of three things that are in that place or used to be there
Crusty uncut loaves, stacks of corned beef tins and the last sausage roll

4) Something that happens/happened there regularly
Iris peddling fast down the road, arriving late back from lunch

5) A question asked in that place
Can I have a plastic bag? 10p! They were free not long back!

6) The end of the day in that place
At 5.29 Iris locks the door, flips the sign to ‘Closed’.
